Where you put your body changes how a spanking feels: how close you are, how much the spanker can swing, how exposed and helpless the person being spanked feels, and how long you can both stay comfortable. These eight spanking positions cover the classics, with a diagram for each of the main ones.

In each diagram, the person being spanked is blue and the spanker is orange. New to spanking in general? Start with our spanking guide, which covers how to start, warming up and aftercare.

    Before you start

    • Agree the basics: how hard, hands or implements, whether marks are OK, and what kind of scene it is (playful, sexy, or “discipline” roleplay).
    • Agree a way to stop, like a safeword or the traffic-light system, plus a hand signal if speech might be hard.
    • Know where to aim. The fleshy lower buttocks and upper thighs. Our impact play guide has a body map of safer areas and places to avoid.
    • Warm up with rubbing and light pats before anything firmer.

    1. Over the knee (OTK)

One partner sits on a chair while the other lies across their lap, face down, hands on the floor; the sitting partner has one hand raised and the other resting on their back.
Over the knee. The person being spanked (blue) lies across the spanker's lap, hands on the floor for balance.

Over the knee spanking is the classic, and for good reason. It’s intimate, a little old-fashioned in a way many people find thrilling, and perfect for hand spanking.

    How to set it up:

    1. The spanker sits on a sturdy armless chair, a sofa or the edge of the bed, feet flat on the floor.
    2. The person being spanked lies across their lap, face down, with their hips over the spanker’s thighs, so the buttocks are the highest point.
    3. Hands and feet rest on the floor (or the bed) for balance. A pillow under the chest helps on a sofa or bed.
    4. The spanker steadies them with one hand on the lower back, not pressing down, and spanks with the other.

Variations: cross a leg over theirs for a more held, “can’t get away” feeling (by agreement), or do it on the bed with the spanker sitting cross-legged. OTK on a bed is softer on everyone’s knees.

Good for: hand spanking, beginners, roleplay, and lots of closeness and checking in.

    2. Bent over the bed

One partner stands and leans forward over the edge of the bed, resting on their forearms, while the other stands beside them with a hand raised.
Bent over the bed. Forearms on the bed take the weight, and the spanker has room to swing.

The person being spanked stands and leans forward over the edge of the bed, resting on their forearms. The spanker stands to the side. There’s more room to swing, so it suits paddles and firmer play. The arm of a sofa or a padded ottoman works too: anything stable at hip height.

Good for: implements, more intense scenes, and a more exposed, “presented” feel.

    3. Lying face down

One partner lies face down on the bed with a pillow under their hips, while the other kneels beside them with a hand raised.
Lying face down, with a pillow under the hips: the most comfortable for longer scenes.

The person being spanked lies face down on the bed with a pillow or two under their hips; the spanker kneels or sits beside them. It’s the most relaxed position for both of you, so it’s ideal for long, slow scenes that build gradually, or for mixing spanks with massage and touch.

Good for: long scenes, relaxation, and anyone with sore knees or wrists.

    4. On all fours

One partner is on their hands and knees on the bed; the other kneels beside them on the far side, one hand on their lower back and one hand raised.
On all fours. The spanker (orange) kneels beside, one hand resting on their partner's lower back.

The person being spanked is on their hands and knees on the bed; the spanker kneels beside them. It’s quick to get into, works naturally during sex, and has a vulnerable, on-display feel. Lowering onto the forearms changes the angle and is easier on the wrists.

Good for: spanking during sex, and short, playful sessions.

    5. Hands on the wall

One partner stands with both hands flat on a wall, leaning slightly forward with feet back; the other stands beside and behind them with a hand raised.
Hands on the wall. Feet back and apart, hands flat on the wall for balance.

The person being spanked stands facing a wall, hands flat on it, feet back and a little apart; the spanker stands beside them. It feels stern and “disciplinary”, which suits roleplay. Keep it short: standing positions get tiring, and legs can go wobbly after a hard spanking.

Good for: short scenes, roleplay, and a strict feel. Never combine it with restraints that stop someone catching themselves.

    6. Over a pile of pillows

Stack pillows or a firm cushion in the middle of the bed, and have the person being spanked lie over it, face down, hips on the top. It raises the target like OTK does, without anyone’s legs going numb.

Good for: longer OTK-style scenes, and spankers with bad knees.

    7. Lying on the back, legs up

The person being spanked lies on their back and lifts their legs, knees toward the chest, holding them behind the thighs (or the spanker holds their ankles). It exposes the lower buttocks and backs of the thighs, and has a very vulnerable feel. Keep it short and gentle: holding the legs up is tiring, and it’s easy to hit the tailbone, so aim carefully.

Good for: short, intense moments for experienced couples.

    8. Standing, bent at the waist

The person being spanked bends forward with hands on their knees or a chair seat. It’s quick and needs no furniture, but balance is harder, so only use hands or light implements, and stop if they wobble.

Good for: a few playful swats, not long scenes.

    Choosing implements for each position

    • Hands work everywhere, and best in close positions like OTK.
    • Paddles need room to swing: bent over or face down. See our picks for the best spanking paddles.
    • A riding crop or flogger suits standing and bent-over positions, where you can see exactly where you’re aiming.

    Stop if…

    • Spanks land on the lower back, tailbone, spine or joints. Pause and reposition.
    • There’s numbness, a sharp or shooting pain, or broken skin.
    • The person being spanked is losing their balance, can’t hold the position, or uses the safeword or signal.

    Afterwards

Help your partner up slowly: legs and heads can be wobbly. A cuddle, water, and a cool cloth or soothing lotion on warm skin make good aftercare, and a check-in the next day helps after a hard spanking.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the best position for spanking?

Over the knee is the most popular, especially for hand spanking: it's close, intimate, and the spanker can feel and see every reaction. For paddles and harder play, bent over the bed gives more room to swing. For long scenes, lying face down with a pillow under the hips is the most comfortable.

How do you do over the knee spanking?

The spanker sits on a sturdy armless chair, sofa or the edge of the bed. The other person lies across their lap, face down, hips over the spanker's thighs, with hands and feet on the floor or bed for balance. The spanker steadies them with one hand on the lower back and spanks with the other, aiming for the lower curve of the buttocks.

Is over the knee spanking good for beginners?

Yes. Hand spanking over the knee is one of the best ways to start: the spanker can't build much force, the closeness makes checking in easy, and the person being spanked can wriggle free or put a hand back to signal stop.

    Where should you spank?

The fleshy lower part of the buttocks (the "sit spot") and the upper outer thighs. Avoid the lower back and kidneys, the tailbone and spine, joints like the hips and backs of the knees, and anywhere bony.

Which spanking positions work during sex?

From behind (on all fours or bent over the bed) is the easiest, because the spanker's hand is right there. Keep spanks during sex lighter and playful, and agree beforehand that they're welcome.
