Paddle material changes the sensation more than almost any other variable — see our what is S&M glossary entry for the broader context on impact play.

Genuine leather

DOMINIX Deluxe Advanced BRAUN Leather Paddle — $24.99. Genuine leather, solid mid-weight construction. A good beginner sting-to-thud ratio — enough presence to feel substantial without being unpredictable.

Budget faux leather

Bondage Boutique Faux Crocodile Leather Paddle — $19.99. Faux leather with a croc-embossed texture, lightweight build. The cheapest, lowest-intensity entry paddle here — a sensible first purchase for testing whether impact play appeals to you at all before spending more.

Silicone (easy-clean alternative)

Tantus Pelt Silicone Paddle — $41.99 (regularly; frequently on sale). 100% body-safe silicone, smooth rounded oval shape, fully boilable and dishwasher-safe. Delivers a firmer, more consistent “pop” than leather, and being non-porous, it’s the easiest of the three to keep hygienic — a good alternate-material pick once you have a sense of your baseline intensity from a leather paddle.

Size and shape

Smaller paddles concentrate force into a smaller area (more intense per hit); larger, flatter paddles spread it out. A rounded, smooth edge (like the Tantus pick above) reduces sharp-edge contact, which is generally more forgiving for beginners than a paddle with hard corners.

Starting intensity

Regardless of material, start lighter than feels necessary — skin needs a scene or two to “warm up,” and it’s much easier to add intensity mid-scene than to walk it back after going too hard. Stick to the fleshier parts of the body (glutes, thighs) and avoid the kidneys, spine, and joints.

Frequently asked questions

What paddle material is best for beginners?
A mid-weight genuine leather paddle gives a balanced sting-to-thud ratio that's easy to control. A lighter faux-leather paddle is an even gentler, cheaper starting point if you want to test the waters first.
How hard should a first spanking session be?
Start much lighter than you think you want, and build up gradually. Skin takes a scene or two to warm up, and it's far easier to increase intensity than to walk it back after going too hard too fast.
Is silicone a good paddle material?
Yes — silicone paddles like the one below deliver a firmer, more consistent 'pop' than leather and are fully non-porous, so they're easy to clean and hygienic. They tend to feel sharper/less forgiving than leather at the same force, so they're worth trying once you have a baseline.
